Description

Produced to document Todd Norsten’s exhibition at Midway Contemporary Art, Safety Club also serves as Norsten’s first monograph. An exercise in subtlety and restraint, the catalog’s design employs only a few minimal gestures — a noticeably simple grid and an overly generous use of white space — to compliment the sparse compositions within Norsten’s work. The paradoxical relationship between the precision of his paintings and the immediacy of his drawings informed my type choices — one a Swiss-designed monospace font, the other a less mechanical and more distinctive sans serif with humanist qualities. The plates are divided into two sections: one presents his large-scale paintings individually, while the other utilizes a series of single- and double-gatefolds to reproduce the smaller works-on-paper together in their respective sets. A critical essay by Philippe Vergne is included at the front-end of the catalog, preceded by installation views from the Safety Club exhibition.
