For R. Luke DuBois’ Weisman exhibition, Hindsight is Always 20/20, I opted to expand on the existing and elegant typographic system inherent in the project itself — focusing instead on re-interpreting the content. DuBois created the project using custom word-frequency software to sort State of the Union addresses from each U.S. president — the resulting word lists are then presented in ascending order as Snellen-esque charts. For the initial exhibition announcement — a simple 6 x 9 postcard — the top word from each chart was extracted to create a new list, which resulted in an odd amalgamation of terms designed to pique one's curiosity without giving the exhibition away entirely. Responding favorably to this approach the museum commissioned me to roll the "top word" approach into a series of retail products, such as 1" buttons and t-shirts — featuring both single word and full list versions. Finally revealing the work itself, the exhibiiton banner and party announcement each reproduced a different chart from the project. In keeping with the spirit of the original work — which was produced entirely as letterpress prints — local letterpress gurus, Studio on Fire, were hired to print the two exhibition announcements.
